What is the law on sexting?

I know punishment depends in each state. Can minors be charged with child pornography or possession? I've heard that minors may have to be registered as sex offenders as well. If that's true, how long will they be registered for? What if the "sexting" was consensual by both parties? Do the same penalties apply? Any information is helpful. Thanks :)
